UCL's Special Collections and UCL’s new publishing activities in an Internet age.

Abstract
This paper celebrates two important developments in UCL – the ongoing move of UCL Special Collections to embrace a digital future, and the creation of UCL Press as a university-based Open Access publisher. The paper starts by examining 10 items from the 7 kilometres of materials which UCL holds. These have been chosen by the Director of Library Services to illustrate the richness and variety of UCL’s holdings. The second part of the paper shows how UCL is embracing digitisation and creating in-depth digital collections of materials from its holdings. The benefits of this approach for both the Library and a global audience, now empowered to use the collections, are explained. The third part of the paper looks at the drivers and intended outcomes from the creation of UCL Press as a university-based Open Access press. Plans for the future development of the Press are explored, with particular reference to the Press’s work in developing an Open textbook platform. The paper ends by summarising the results of all these endeavours, concluding that the two digital platforms for UCL Special Collections and from UCL Press are important new developments which enhance the role of UCL as London’s Global University.
