The wartime films of Humphrey Jennings and Powell & Pressburger and their role as historical sources.
Masters thesis , UNSPECIFIED.
Abstract
This dissertation investigates the wartime films of Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger (working as The Archers) and Humphrey Jennings, concentrating on how they work as representations of that period in history. The study looks at ideas of realism in British cinema, as reflected in the work of these film-makers, one from a documentary tradition, the others from that of fiction feature films. Also examined are how the films were received by contemporaries and their use of symbolic propaganda content. Finally, it looks at how, in the intervening decades, changes in the film-makers reputations and in the relevance of their films as vehicles for the popular memory of the British wartime experience have altered. Although these film-makers came from different ends of the creative spectrum, studying them together provides an opportunity to trace common cultural patterns and the importance of cultural context to the survivability of film as an historical source.
