Abstract

Abstract in English: This paper presents the first analysis of the geographic and social distribution of surnames in Mexico, based upon the hypothesis that surnames have the potential to reflect historical and contemporary migration, demographic and socio-cultural interaction processes. Several geodemographic analysis techniques are used using the top 100 surnames nationally and in each State, taken from the electoral register (a total of 548 surnames). Amongst them, a comparative analysis of surname frequencies between countries and social groups is carried out, as well as the use of Kohonen self-organising maps, to create regional clusters of surnames. The results obtained are encouraging, and lists of surnames grouped by the different regional and social patterns found have been generated, revealing large differences in the current population structure of Mexico that require a much deeper interpretative analysis.
