By the end of this chapter you should: • be able to understand the most important functions of the various parts of the gastrointestinal tract • be aware of the main actions of digestive enzymes and the neural and hormonal regulators of digestion • know the main features of absorption and secretion of specific nutrients, water and electrolytes • appreciate that luminal factors play a role in the regulation of food intake.
