Abstract

In the UK, the rates each year of women who die from breast cancer are the highest in the world. Yet many cancer researchers have difficulty in gaining patients' agreement to take part in research which addresses this problem (Taylor et al 1984, 1987; Tobias and Souhami 1993) owing to 'the apparently irreconcilable demands of medical ethics and clinical research' (Baum 1990). The media vary between extolling medical innov-ations and criticising certain types of research. Health professionals want research-based knowledge but many worry about research processes. Members of the public want effective care but feel uncertain about sharing in the work of discovering what is effective. Very little research explores these important views. Social research about breast cancer can review these issues, and can also illuminate broader aspects of health treatment and research, including questions about informing and supporting patients, consent, communication, research and randomised trials, and relations between doctors, patients and nurses, and between medicine, the law and society.
