Abstract
The EU referendum has triggered powerful, contradictory emotions. Britain needs open debate but the PM cuts short controversy. My article consider how cultural traditions shape political debate and therefore the life of a country, especially in times of uncertainty. I compare debating styles across Europe and suggest that Britain, after the noxious controversies of the referendum campaign, is too concerned with political decorum and a return to “fair play”, and that this might stand in the way of a much-needed public debate. I briefly refer to melodrama as an alternative model for this debate, and explain why many British writers, unlike politicians, have chosen to express their thoughts and feelings in strong, emotional terms.
