Abstract
During 1996-1998, we conducted a questionnaire survey among 2,272 school students aged 7-17, in schools in the UK and Northern Ireland, and we held 34 small group discussions. The survey themes were the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child 1989, and the young people’s views about their rights in school. This article reports our general research findings and then discusses some of the implications for policy. Greater understanding and use of the UN Convention could make a crucial contribution to more just and well-grounded youth policies.
