Abstract
Pupils, from five year olds onwards, ought to be encouraged, as a fundamental part of education, to engage in imaginative and critical discussion about how to go about solving problems – including problems of living. The role of the teacher would be, not to provide or assess solutions, but to encourage participatory rationality. The discussion seminars would not be group therapy, debate or indoctrination. They would influence, and be influenced by, the rest of the curriculum. The hope would be that pupils would learn how to realize what is of value in life by rational means. All this would require a revolution in education, from primary schools to university.
