Abstract
There is considerable evidence on the barriers to access for people with physical and sensory disabilities, particularly those in wheelchairs and those with visual impairments. There are various sets of guidelines on how these can be addressed. However, there is very little information about the accessibility needs of those with cognitive disabilities. These include dementia, autism, cerebral palsy and learning disabilities. Some of these result from a growing elderly population. This paper explores the issues involved in identifying and overcoming the barriers to access for those with cognitive disabilities. The paper outlines some of the issues that need to be examined and some of the approaches used to address them such as travel training, driver training, special transport services, journey planning and mobile phone apps.
