The Presentation of the Past: Pitfalls and Potentials-Education and Archaeology, Heritage and Communities in Turkey-The Case Studies of Çatalhöyük, Ani and Hattuşa.
Doctoral thesis , UCL (University College London).
Abstract
This dissertation examines the problems and issues relating to the preservation of archaeological and heritage sites with specific reference to Turkey, and considers possible solutions for improving protection and ensuring the maintenance of such sites, by increasing awareness among local communities. In order to consider a series of case studies which underpin this work, a general overview of the current provision of heritage education is offered for Turkey, including an analysis of curricula and text books currently used in Turkish schools. The thesis contains a substantial body of data derived from detailed surveys of individuals and groups in local and associated communities, together with information from heritage and education specialists as well as decision makers at various levels of governance. From the data derived from these sources the current effectiveness of existing approaches to achieving protection of the resources represented by heritage sites is considered. An analysis is offered of the ways in which local people may be involved and also benefit from the existence of heritage sites, as well as ensuring better protection. Finally approaches to ensure ways in which sustainable, long term protection and maintenance, as well as wider benefits, may be achieved through improved education provision and formal education programmes is offered. These stress the need for a wider involvement in understanding and protecting the past.
