Abstract
The beginning of seafaring marked a watershed in Roman narratives of progress and decline. Against this background I examine a series of Argonautic moments from several poets to investigate what allusions to the idea of the Argo as first ship might suggest about the Romans’ perception of their imperial policy and the origins of their own literary history. The Argo emerges as a suitable vehicle for reflections on foreign policy and literary derivativeness in the poetry of Ennius, Accius, Catullus, Virgil, Phaedrus, and Valerius Flaccus.
