Towards Vulnerable Automation: Exploring the Connections between Affective Experience and Trust in Technology.
Masters thesis , UNSPECIFIED.
Abstract
In this thesis, the connections between appropriate levels of user trust in interactive systems and their affective experiences with these systems are explored. This is conducted through evaluations of three different prototypes using various methodologies as proposed in the Value Sensitive Design framework and also through a survey of new interaction design practitioners and an expert interview. The analysis of results was conducted through the lens of the Human Factors Engineering approach to trust research and structured through the bases of user trust in automation: performance, process, and purpose. The evaluations, the survey, and the expert interview all point to connections between trust in technology and the experiential design qualities of ambiguity, transparency, and open interpretation. The resulting discussion points to the importance of interactive systems showing their vulnerabilities in an open way to create a trusting relationship that is similar to one found in a respectful human- human trusting relationship. As technologies become more complex and susceptible to uncertainties, users should be made aware of these issues in order for them to trust the systems appropriately and this can be achieved in part through the careful use of ambiguity, transparency, and open interpretation.
