Influence of Geometric Characteristics of Revolving-Paddle Flocculator with Vertical Shaft on the Power Input into the Water.
Masters thesis (M.S), University of Sao Paulo.
Abstract
Theoretical and experimental studies are presented on the influence of the geometric characteristics of the mechanical flocculator of rotating blades parallel to the vertical axis on the power introduced into the water during flocculation, emphasizing the parameter cd (drag coefficient) and k (speed of water in relation to that of the board). Using a wind tunnel and a water channel, from the laboratories of the Department of Hydraulics and Sanitation, experimental measurements were carried out that allowed the calculation of the drag coefficient as a function of the number of Reynolds. Through the use of a suitable installation, the value of k was experimentally determined for several agitator configurations and several rotations. This parameter varies for the same rotation and agitators with different configurations, contrary to what is found in the literature, in which a constant value equal to 0.25 is recommended, regardless of the equipment's geometry. It is also presented a study of the flocculation efficiency of two types of water, prepared in the laboratory, water type i - high turbidity and low true colour and water type ii - low turbidity and high true colour, with 3 types of agitator configuration. It was found that, for the same values of velocity gradient and flocculation time, different values of turbidity removal efficiency and apparent colour result for the geometries.
