An anthropological analysis of interpersonal violence.
Masters thesis , UCL (University College London).
Abstract
My research aims to examine the self-perceptions of males with a history of interpartner violence and its treatment (namely, the experiences they have had of processes of therapy and any other attempts to address their ‘self’ as ‘violent’). It is a small-scale exploratory project looking at theories and practices surrounding perpetrators of interpartner violence, and seeking to open up new perspectives on the issue, by examining men’s self-perceptions – i.e. how they interpret both their violence and the treatments they may have engaged with. Research questions surround issues of masculinities, domestic relations and violence, engagement with processes of legal justice and therapy. The framework from which I am working involves respecting the validity of the perpetrator’s thoughts, feelings and perspectives with regards to violence within their lives. I seek to approach the issue of domestic violence at ground level, namely, by examining the everyday and existential elements which have informed this violence for perpetrators. There are implications for treatment interventions, as the focus of my research is the meaning of violence for the men who have themselves been involved in it. The research focuses on fourteen men participating in treatment at HMP Grendon. The fieldwork consists of a series of unstructured interviews, 90 minutes in length. The men are known to have perpetrated interpartner violence, and are (or have been) engaged with forms of treatment. In these interviews, we (the participant and I) examine together their perceptions about violence in their lives; also, their perceptions about the kinds of therapeutic processes they became involved with as a consequence of violence they may have perpetrated, and the impact these had upon their self-perceptions.
