Abstract
This article provides an overview of the various linguistic aspects in which nonbinary gender identity can be expressed. It begins with a short survey of traditional recognition of nonbinary gender in cultures around the world and then presents the different ways of developing terms for nonbinary and related gender identities in different languages. It then investigates different types of gender-neutral pronouns, followed by ways of adapting nouns, adjectives, suffixed prepositions, and verbs for nonbinary reference, as well as nonbinary names. Finally, the article examines orthographic techniques used to make written language gender-neutral and concludes with a discussion of prosody and voice among nonbinary speakers.
