Abstract

This paper aims to explore the horizontal and vertical spillover effects of FDI on the total factor productivity(TFP) of domestic firms, using the panel data of 27 manufacturing sub-sectors in Chinese Yangtze River Delta during the period from 2000 to 2007.After estimating the TFP by the method of Malmquist index,it conducts the regression by different regions and manufacturing sub-sectors respectively. The results demonstrate that,as far as the vertical spillover effect of FDI are concerned, there exist positive backward linkage spillover and negative forward linkage spillover whether in Yangtze River Delta as the whole region or in each provincial districts, namely Shanghai,Jiangsu and Zhejiang;as for the horizontal spillover of FDI,they present positive effects for both Jiangsu and Zhejiang, but negative effects for Shanghai.
