Abstract

Disability arises from the barriers that individuals face in physical and social environments. This is reflected in the ‘social model of disability’which says that disability arises from the environment rather than a person’s impairment. There are many types of disability including physical, sensory and non-visible conditions such as dementia and anxiety. More disabled than non-disabled people have various health conditions such as diabetes, obesity and heart disease. These issues all make travel more challenging for disabled people than others making it more difficult for disabled people to reach employment, education and services and can lead to social exclusion.
