Abstract

AIMS: Adolescence is a period of heightened social sensitivity and increased risk for internalising problems. This paper aimed to systematically review empirical studies using experimental social evaluation tasks to investigate the relationship with internalising mental health symptoms, such as depression and anxiety. METHODS: Systematic searches of PsycInfo, Medline, Web of Science Core Collection, and the Cochrane Library databases were undertaken for all relevant studies from database inception to November 2024. A standardised quality assessment rating tool was used to assess the quality of included studies. RESULTS: Thirteen studies met the inclusion criteria. A narrative synthesis was conducted to summarise and interpret the findings from the included papers. The results highlighted the heterogeneity in the social evaluative outcomes reported in the literature, making identifying consistent and reliable findings across papers challenging. There was a lack of support for several key hypotheses within the research field, with either mixed or limited findings about hypothesised affective, expectancy and behavioural biases related to internalising symptoms. Research seemed to highlight negative memory biases associated with elevated depression symptoms. CONCLUSIONS: This systematic review highlights the need for further research in replicating findings for specific cognitive and behavioural social evaluative outcomes, as well as across experimental paradigms. Promising methodologies for future analysis of social evaluative tasks are highlighted, including computational modelling approaches. The findings support in advancing our understanding of the relationship between internalising symptoms and social evaluation in young people.
