Abstract

Fluid antenna systems (FASs), with their inherent spatial reconfigurability, have emerged as a promising solution for enabling sixth-generation (6G) wireless networks. By dynamically adapting to channel variations, FASs offer significant performance gains over conventional fixed-position antenna (FPA) systems. This paper investigates a FAS-assisted multiuser multiple-input single-output (MU-MISO) downlink system, where the base station (BS) and user terminals adopt heterogeneous fluid antenna architectures tailored to practical deployment constraints. Specifically, the BS deploys mechanically reconfigurable fluid antennas constrained to discrete grid locations, whereas each user terminal is equipped with a compact one-dimensional fluid antenna capable of activating a single port. A sum-rate maximization problem is formulated to jointly optimize the BS transmit beamforming, antenna position selection, and user port selection. By adopting regularized zero-forcing (RZF) precoding, the problem is reformulated as a joint optimization of BS antenna positions and user-side port indices. Despite this reformulation, the problem remains computationally intractable. To address this challenge, a centralized cross-entropy optimization (CEO) algorithm and two decentralized alternating optimization (AO)-based schemes, namely AO-CEO and AO-GHS, are proposed. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithms significantly outperform conventional FPA-based baselines and existing FAS-assisted methods across a wide range of RZF configurations.
