Abstract

By 2050, one-quarter of the UK population will be older than 65[1]; requiring 350,000 additional care home (CH) beds[2]. CH residents are extremely vulnerable to infections that spread rapidly through shared environments and frequent contact with staff and other residents. Severe infection outcomes occur more frequently; early in the COVID-19 pandemic, CH residents experienced ten-fold greater mortality than age-matched community-dwelling peers (compared with four-to-five-fold pre-pandemic)[3]. Outbreak control measures (including closures) cause distress for residents - many of whom are living with dementia and are nearing end of life[4]. Reflecting this, UK regulations discourage closures to visitors[5], but halting new admissions still carries substantial financial and reputational ramifications for care providers.
