Abstract
This thesis makes a novel contribution by focusing on objective examination of sleep and in adults diagnosed with mental health conditions, followed by feasibility study providing sleep management. The thesis is divided into six chapters: Chapters 1 and 2 introduce the topic and review of the literature. Chapter 1 describes sleep architecture and the importance of sleep for healthy physiological and psychological functioning whilst Chapter 2 provides an overview about mental health, in particular anxiety and depression. Chapter 3 describes Study 1 which examines sleep in a general context with the use of survey to explore psychological and environmental factors impacting sleep. Chapter 4 presents study 2 which explored examining the feasibility and acceptability of a consumer-grade EEG headband and actigraphy for sleep monitoring among adults with depression and anxiety. Chapter 5 presents the methods and findings of my last study: an intervention study which piloted an adapted Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Insomnia via telehealth among adults with depression and anxiety living in Saudi Arabia. Chapter 6 provides a general discussion of the works presented in relation to mental health and different cultural factors. In addition, wider considerations for future research, practices in Saudi Arabia and Middle easter countries are discussed.
