Abstract

Overview: Part 1 presents a systematic review examining the Chinese public’s knowledge and attitudes toward dementia, and identifies factors influencing these views. The 19 studies synthesised indicated an overall low level of knowledge and predominantly negative attitudes toward dementia, highlighting the need for demographically and culturally adapted interventions. Part 2 is an empirical study that aimed to culturally adapt and assess the feasibility of the Hong Kong version of the Dementia Awareness for Caregivers course (DAC-HK). The DAC-HK was adapted and delivered to 24 family caregivers of individuals experiencing dementia. Feasibility was evaluated using data on recruitment, attendance, data collection procedures, and intervention implementation. Findings suggest that the DAC-HK was largely feasible and acceptable. Feedback from questionnaires and semi-structured interviews also supported the course’s potential to positively impact dementia family caregivers in Hong Kong. Part 3 provides a critical appraisal of the research process by discussing the motivations, challenges, and implications that emerged throughout the process of conducting the systematic review and empirical study. Together, this thesis aims to provide a better understanding of current dementia awareness and attitudes in China, and introduces a culturally adapted dementia awareness course to enhance support for family caregivers in Hong Kong.
