Abstract

Since the first Latin verbs in -izare ( -issare, -idiare ) appear in the comedies of Plautus, the suffix became increasingly productive in the language. Today, it remains a frequent resource in the formation of new verbs in the Romance languages. The present work aims to explore the use of the suffix -izare ( -idiare ) in Christian literature of the 3rd-6th centuries AD. We will focus on the texts and contexts in which verbs with the suffix appeared in this period, as well as the variant of the suffix used in each case ( -izare or -idiare ) . We will examine the way in which the suffix is used to create new verbs and the semantic value it carries. Particular attention will be paid to the verbs that we identify as creations within the Latin language ( pulverare 'to pulverize', martyrizare 'to become a martyr') since these are the verbs that provide us with important information about the value that the suffix had for the Latin speaker of the time.
