Abstract

The studies in the present special issue address some of the core issues at the intersection of language maintenance, intergenerational transmission, identity, acculturation processes, social environment, attitudes and policies, technology, and more, from the point of view of family language policy. Language policy decisions in multilingual migrant families are influenced by a variety of social, cultural, economic, and psychological factors. In this commentary, I focus on some of the key considerations that shape those decisions, including family dynamics and aspirations, community environment and social networks, and institutional support; emotional attachment and sense of belonging; and attitudes and strategies, by both the parents and the children.
