Abstract

Throughout the past few decades, scholarly works on the ancient Greek novels have become more invested in studying the social and political impacts of the Roman empire on these narratives, frequently with an aim to exploring the position of Greeks under the Roman empire. More recently, there has been an increase in studies which focus on the worlds outside of the Greco-Roman sphere which appear in the novels, though there is much to be added to this field of study. This thesis builds on this body of research and explores four of the ancient Greek novels through a lens of postcolonial theory with an aim to understanding more about the representation of non-Greek people and places. Postcolonial theory has been underused in direct studies of Greek and Latin texts until very recently, and this thesis aims to contribute something novel to the field by using postcolonial theory to reexamine the Greek novels, switching the focus away from Greeks under the Roman empire to the non-Greek Other. As narratives which rely on the depiction of travel from inside the Greco-Roman world to what are clearly considered alien places on the outside, these works are ideal sources for examining non-Greeks and the perception of them by Greeks who were themselves living under imperialism. This study consists of four chapters, each focusing on one of the four novels: Callirhoe, the Ephesiaca, Leucippe & Cleitophon and the Aethiopica. Such a structure allows for systematic examinations of themes related to non-Greeks from different areas which are relevant to each of the novels whilst also enabling a (mostly) diachronic exploration of both the consistencies and differences in Greek representations of non-Greeks through fiction between the 1st/2nd centuries CE and the 3rd century CE.
