Abstract
Ivone de Mattos Bernardo was born in the Quilombo Maria Conga Maré in Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil. A graduate in Social Service and the first in her family to attend university, Ivone currently serves in the leadership of the National Coordination of Quilombola Articulation (Coordenação Nacional de Articulação de Quilombos, CONAQ), where she fights for the recognition of Quilombola territories and advocates for the representation of Quilombolas in elected office—a continuation of her prior activism as the president of the Association of Quilombo Remnant Communities in the State of Rio de Janeiro (Associação das Comunidades Quilombolas do Estado de Rio de Janeiro, ACQUILERJ). Malu A. C. Gatto, Associate Professor of Latin American Politics at University College London, and Debora Thome, Postdoctoral researcher at Fundação Getulio Vargas, are devoted to studying and advocating for the political representation of marginalized groups in Brazil. In this chapter, the co-authors first provide a brief history of Quilombolas in Brazil. Then, they discuss how recent political developments motivated a strategic change in Quilombola activism and the growth of efforts to elect more Quilombola women to political office.
