Abstract
This thesis explores the post-medieval archaeology of Epping Forest, an ancient landscape in Northern London managed by the City of London Corporation. Within the growing body of literature concerning the post-medieval archaeology of the city of London, metropolitan open spaces have received little attention. Landscape archaeology has likewise shown little interest in such spaces. Through a review of literature and historical research, this dissertation establishes the potential contributions archaeological studies of metropolitan open spaces in general, and Epping Forest in particular can make towards existing research agendas for London’s post-medieval archaeology. The dissertation explores this potential using non- invasive and minimally invasive surveying methods, including LiDAR analysis, magnetic susceptibility, magnetometry, surface surveys, surface artefact collection, and analysis of collection stores. Surveying methods uncovered numerous Second World War civil defense features. Archaeological impact from the conflict, and the historical record concerning civil defense policy, it concludes that Second World War impacts are an imperative topic to explore for any archaeological studies in London’s parks, heaths, commons, forests, and other open spaces. In addition, this thesis includes a detailed landscape analysis of Wanstead Flats, a heathland at the southern tip of Epping Forest, which identifies and critically examines features dating back at least to the 18th century.
