Abstract

.This thesis explores environmental education in Indonesia from a posthuman perspective, addressing the gap in integrating the agency of nonhuman elements in environmental processes. This aspect is often overlooked in favour of human-centred approaches. The thesis aims to develop a conceptual framework that recognises and integrates both human and nonhuman actors to facilitate children's environmental participation in Indonesia. The thesis objectives include defining key concepts, assessing the interactions between human and nonhuman entities in a specific children's environmental initiative, and developing a conceptual framework that incorporates posthuman perspectives into environmental education. A qualitative case study was conducted on the Aksiku Project in Bandung, Indonesia, using ethnographic methods such as observations, interviews, and focus groups. Aksiku used digital tools and interactive modules to engage children during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, employing a participatory approach that encouraged hands-on problem-solving and action-based learning. Key findings demonstrate that nonhuman elements significantly influence children's understanding of environmental issues, and that engagement with the material surroundings fosters connections to broader environmental concerns. The findings also emphasise the opportunities and challenges of remote participation, highlighting how technology, spatial dynamics, and children's emotional engagement intersect in educational practices. Additionally, the findings underscore the role of teachers in navigating institutional barriers and promoting environmental education, even with shifting educational priorities and systemic constraints. Lastly, the findings emphasise the dynamics involved in maintaining the integrity of environmental education projects during changing conditions and difficult times, stressing the role of reflexivity in organising this project. This thesis makes three primary contributions: (1) proposing a framework that emphasises the interconnectedness of elements for a more systemic engagement with environmental issues; (2) examining how material realities, technological mediations, policy frameworks, and organisational strategies shape children's environmental involvement; (3) generating empirical knowledge of environmental education in Indonesia, thus offering insights into children's participation in environmental sustainability, and the role of adults and technology in educational spaces.
