Abstract

This paper explores how urban infrastructure influences emotional responses among London’s youth, focusing on Notting Hill. By integrating geotagged data from Flickr with GIS-based spatial analyses, it highlights social media's capacity to capture granular emotional insights among younger populations. Both quantitative and qualitative methods, including TextBlob, reveal strong positive associations between green spaces, robust services, and favorable emotions, while transportation nodes and leisure facilities sometimes trigger negatives. Distinct cultural events and neighborhood attributes further shape emotion distribution, underscoring how local contexts can amplify or mitigate urban experiences. These findings highlight how built environments can significantly affect emotional well-being at the neighborhood level. The research advances discussions in urban design, environmental psychology, and emotional geography by illustrating how social media data informs the creation of more supportive environments. Additionally, it underscores the potential of big data for evidence-based policymaking. Ultimately, the study stresses the practical importance of incorporating emotional considerations into urban planning, advocating targeted infrastructural enhancements that foster well-being and enrich residents’ emotional lives.
