Abstract

Tracing the evolution from traditional office design all the way to postpandemic workplaces, this chapter addresses the environmental factors that influence well-being, including satisfaction, effectiveness, and wellness in the office workplace. Psychological constructs are explored including personal space, privacy, personal control, status, environmental stress, wellness, and engagement. Given the magnitude of financial commitment in the provision of new workplaces, and the significant multiplier effects that the workplace can have on long-term work outcomes, health and well-being, it is imperative that building programming and design focus on the workplace needs of the particular organizational culture and context. Opportunities to exchange ideas and collaborate on shared endeavors have implications for work effectiveness, cultivating innovative ideas, promoting shared office culture, and supporting health and well-being. When designed appropriately, the workplace plays a vital role in organizational success.
