Abstract

Literate Resistances brings together a collection of essays that analyze the relationships between writing conceived as a technology of power, the different forms of construction of intellectual authority, and the strategic reappropriations of Western knowledge incorporated into the processes of literacy among a group of subaltern authors and agents during the colonial period in Hispanic America. From the use of legal and theological tactics in individual or collective efforts to reinstate legitimate rights to critical reformulations of the Conquest, Indigenous histories prior to the Spanish invasion, and the unjust social conditions of the Colony, this book examines the different forms of appropriation of writing and the production of knowledge by these subaltern sectors who confronted the conditions of inequality caused by Spanish domination. It also explores the multiple textual scenarios in which the highest figures of royal or ecclesiastical authority were interpellated, revealing writing as a key tool for negotiating with the imperial order and, in turn, recording other perspectives of coloniality. By examining specific cases, this book also offers a look at the contradictions and fissures of imperial power through which these voices of American otherness managed to enter the colonial archive.
