Abstract

This paper investigates the lateral-torsional buckling (LTB) behaviour of lean duplex stainless steel I-shaped plate girders (LDIPGs) with slender stiffened webs, which have not been previously studied. A three-dimensional finite element (FE) model of simply supported LDIPGs subjected to uniform bending was developed, validated, and employed to analyse the structural response in detail. The study considered three key parameters including the unbraced member length, section modulus and radius of gyration of the compression flange. Results showed that the elastic portion of the material response largely governs the LTB strength of LDIPGs. It was found that increasing the section modulus or radius of gyration enhances the LTB capacity, regardless of the member length, with radius of gyration having a more pronounced effect. A detailed design study was conducted, focusing on European and Australian standards, and design improvement was proposed based on the analysis for the European design method. Additionally, the elastic and plastic non-dimensional slenderness limits of the LDIPGs, which help in defining the failure type of the girders, have been obtained. A new design model, which utilises these non-dimensional slenderness limits, is then proposed and shown to provide excellent predictions for the current girders. This new method provided more accurate LTB resistance predictions compared to existing and modified design approaches.
