Abstract

The importance of thermal comfort in creating indoor environments that support student perception, preferences, and satisfaction, existing research has focused primarily on hot or cold seasons or extreme climates. Researchers have neglected the need for thermal comfort evaluation of university students in higher educational buildings during the transition season when temperature variations are small or in temperate climates. This study considers thermal comfort in relation to outdoor temperature during the transitional season at University College London. A total of 251 responses were collected by means of a thermal comfort questionnaire during March of the spring semester. The predicted mean vote (PMV) and adaptive methods were used to compare with the actual votes by means of linear regression analysis. Survey participants prefer cooler environments. The thermal neutral temperature was 23.9 °C, with acceptable temperature ranges for 80 % and 90 % of university students being 22.7–25.1 °C and 23.2–24.6 °C, respectively. Compared with other studies, the thermal sensitivity of university students in this study was especially high because of adaptive behaviour, including clothing adjustment and the low overall penetration rate of air conditioning in UK buildings. Our results provide insight into realistic evaluation of the thermal indoor environment in educational buildings in the United Kingdom and provide strong data support for the key design parameters of the thermal environment of university students.
