Abstract

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and other “third wave” therapies are increasingly popular interventions. Whereas conventional psychotherapies such as Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy aim to change the content or frequency of negative internal experiences, third-wave therapies aim to change the relationship individuals have with such experiences. A growing evidence base suggests that ACT and other third-wave therapies may be beneficial for improving a range of outcomes in mental and physical health contexts, including chronic pain, psychiatric disorders, chronic disease, and personality disorders in older adults.
