Abstract
Kris Butler’s Drink Maps in Victorian Britain is a richly illustrated history of an intriguing example of persuasive cartography, reproducing in incredible detail myriad rare examples of drink maps from across Britain (and beyond). The book’s chapters trace the history of the Temperance Movement, from the emergence of drink maps to effect social change through to the use of licensing laws to restrict the opening of new establishments. Ultimately, Butler argues, the maps failed to change behaviour; rather, it was social change, coupled with high taxes on the price of alcohol, that had shifted rates of alcohol consumption by the early decades of the twentieth century.
