Abstract

This paper reflects upon community-led mapping process undertaken as part of the Urban African Risk Knowledge in Freetown in Sierra Leone and Karonga in Malawi. The aim of the methodology adopted was manifold: to produce geo-located data, in an environment where this was scarce, to capture different everyday risks, their causes and spatial distribution, offering a comprehensive spatial understanding of how these risks are produced and reproduced over time, where and with what consequences. The purpose of the research is to inform action of where and how to disrupt risk accumulation cycles. The methodology is itself designed to contribute to governance structures for managing risk. Mapping is taken as a process for the spatial co-learning across different actors in the city and a means to strengthen capacity to act. We do this by careful working through three interrelated side within the mapping process: the reading, writing and audiencing of maps.
