Abstract

Sustainable construction practices have gained prominence within the industry, with stakeholders increasingly adopting strategies to minimise carbon footprints, conserve resources, enhance energy efficiency, and support the resilience of built environments. Amid this landscape, precast concrete structures have emerged as a valuable building technique, offering several advantages such as reduced material usage, expedited construction timelines, improved quality control, enhanced recyclability of materials, and minimised on-site waste generation. This study introduces a sustainability assessment model for evaluating and comparing precast concrete alternatives from a sustainability perspective. The proposed methodology is based on MIVES, wherein economic, environmental, and social indicators are measured and aggregated with assigned weights, resulting in an overall sustainability index. The model is applied to two building designs, one precast and one in-situ. The analysis concludes that precast concrete buildings hold substantial potential for achieving sustainable solutions in the built environment. This research is part of the ongoing efforts by the International Federation for Structural Concrete (Fédération Internationale du Béton, fib) to promote sustainability throughout the construction industry. Notably, Task Group 6.3, titled “Sustainability of structures with precast elements,” comprises global experts from industry and academia, who jointly developed the decision-making method presented in this paper after extensive deliberations.
