Abstract
This chapter explores language reclamation and revitalization in the Nordic countries: Finland (including Åland), Sweden, Norway, and Denmark (including Greenland and the Faroe Islands). Language reclamation and revitalization are viewed in this chapter as decolonial processes that cannot be separated from culture and the environment. The chapter lists the endangered and minoritized languages in the Nordic region and comments on their history and current statuses. It discusses measures that have been implemented in the region and features the following case studies founded in previous research: formal education, language nests, master–apprentice programs, social media, music, language planning, and symbolic reclamation/revitalization. The chapter concludes with a summary of the challenges in language revitalization in the region, as well as suggestions for future research.
