Abstract
This article offers an overview of language in healthcare settings, focusing on research that considers professional/patient communication. It illustrates a shift in focus on interactional asymmetries toward a nuanced patient-centered perspective, and the need to support linguistically and culturally diverse populations, through interpreting and translation provision. While more recent studies show recognition of the possible communicative advantages that may be held by linguistically skilled transnational staff, there is a strong emphasis on exploring the potential risks and benefits of translation technology.
