Abstract
Housing has become a critical staff recruitment and retention issue for NHS Trusts across England, a symptom of the wider housing affordability crisis that is particularly acute in the major cities and across the south. At Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust (LGT) 80% of staff are employed in Bands 2 to 8, for whom local average private sector rental costs would represent 83% to 53% of disposable income after tax, with the London High Cost Area Supplement (HCAS) added. The survey findings presented in this report indicate that housing cost burdens of this magnitude are being endured by a large proportion of staff and many also face living in substandard housing conditions. The findings show that positive action on providing staff housing could make a substantial and positive impact.
