Abstract
HoloLens 2 is an Optical See Through Head Mounted Display (OST-HMD) categorized as an Augmented Reality system. In this thesis, the device's displayed images, referred to as Holo-images, are utilized to guide surgical procedures. Limited research addresses guiding moving instruments like a saw. This thesis aims to assess the potential of HoloLens 2 in directing the placement of fibula osteotomy cuts during free flap harvest. The current standard is to apply physical cutting guides to perform fibula osteotomy. These are patient specific 3D-printed stencils, constructed from patient’s CT scan and Virtual Surgical Planning (VSP), and overlayed onto the fibula bone to guide the position and angulation of the cutting instrument such as a saw. The shortcomings of this method include production time, lack of intra-operative flexibility and dissection to fit the physical guide. The thesis proposes a HoloLens 2 solution to overcome these shortcomings. The solution would require surgeons to perform the VSP to upload onto HoloLens 2. The HoloLens 2 is required to display the guiding digital image in the correct position. The surgeon is required to wear the HoloLens 2 during guidance and perceive the digital image in the correct position and perform the osteotomy in the guided position and angulation. In the thesis a series of studies have been conducted to evaluate the HoloLens 2 solution.
