Abstract

**Optic Neuritis in MS and Demyelinating Diseases: Updates on Diagnosis, Biomarkers, and 2024 Diagnostic Criteria** Optic neuritis (ON) is a frequent and clinically significant presentation in **multiple sclerosis (MS)** and other demyelinating diseases such as **neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD)** and **myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein-associated disease (MOGAD)**. This presentation provides a comprehensive update on the diagnostic, prognostic, and therapeutic implications of ON in these conditions, with a focus on advancements in imaging and electrophysiology. Emerging evidence underscores the utility of **optical coherence tomography (OCT)** and **visual evoked potentials (VEPs)** as non-invasive tools for assessing optic nerve structure and function. We will review how these technologies contribute to distinguishing between MS, NMOSD, and MOGAD, providing insights into disease-specific patterns of optic nerve damage and recovery. The potential of OCT and VEPs in predicting long-term visual and neurological outcomes will also be explored. Additionally, this session addresses the anticipated **2024 revision of the International Panel Diagnostic Criteria for Multiple Sclerosis**, focusing on how advances in our understanding of ON and the integration of OCT and VEP findings may refine diagnostic algorithms. Specific attention will be given to the evolving role of ON as a key diagnostic and phenotypic marker in MS and its differentiation from other demyelinating diseases. By integrating the latest research with practical clinical applications, this presentation aims to equip clinicians and researchers with the knowledge to enhance diagnostic accuracy, tailor management strategies, and contribute to the ongoing refinement of diagnostic criteria for MS and related disorders.
