Abstract

This article analyzes the approaches of George Luckyj to the translation and presentation of Ukrainian works for an English-speaking audience, in particular the principles of their editing, arrangement and socio-cultural positioning, which demonstrates the potential of his editological concept for a fundamental reformatting of the field of Ukrainian studies at the international level today. The investigation proved that the expansion of interpretive frameworks and the building up of intellectual symbolic capital was the fundamental goal of Yuriy Lutskyi's editological concept - a vision that has not lost its relevance to this day. Based on the conducted analysis, it is possible to single out four key components of his editological concept of translated editions: historical-dialogical approach (broader contextualization), thematic selectivity, thorough paratextual accompaniment and relevant translation. The core of the concept is the decolonization of knowledge: Yuriy Lutskyi strives to present Ukrainian literature as an equal component of the world cultural discourse, going beyond colonial narratives. This is proved by the English-language editions prepared by him of the works of Mykola Khvylovy, the prose of the modernists of the 1920s and the well-known reader "Modern Ukrainian Short Stories", among a number of other initiatives. His landmark publishing project is the anthology of primary source documents of Ukrainian intellectual history in English translations "Towards an Intellectual History of Ukraine: An Anthology of Ukrainian Thought from 1710 to 1995", which was realized in 1996 in Toronto in collaboration with Ralph Lindheim. In this context, the article also updates the editology of translation as an important interdisciplinary direction of translation studies, which makes it possible to comprehensively look at the historiosophy of the reception of Ukrainian culture in a foreign language space and comprehensively problematize interpretive shifts.// У цій статті проаналізовано підходи Юрія Луцького (George Luckyj) до перекладу та представлення українських творів для англомовної аудиторії, зокрема принципи їхнього редагування, упорядкування і соціокультурного позиціонування, що демонструє потенціал його едитологічної концепції для принципового переформатування сфери україністики на міжнародному рівні cьогодні. У розвідці доведено, що розширення інтерпретаційних рамок та нарощення інтелектуального символічного капіталу було засадничою метою едитологічної концепції Юрія Луцького – візія, яка не втрачає актуальності й досі. Спираючись на проведений аналіз, можна виокремити чотири ключові компоненти його едитологічної концепції перекладних видань: історико-діалогічний підхід (ширша контекстуалізація), тематична вибірковість, ґрунтовний паратекстуальний супровід та релевантний переклад. Стрижнем концепції є деколонізація знання: Юрій Луцький прагне представити українську літературу як рівноправну складову світового культурного дискурсу, виходячи за межі колоніальних наративів. Це доводять підготовлені ним англомовні видання творів Миколи Хвильового, прози модерністів 1920-х рр. та загальновідомої читанки «Modern Ukrainian Short Stories», окрім низки інших ініціатив. Його віховим видавничим проєктом позиціонуємо антологію документів-першоджерел української інтелектуальної історії в англомовних перекладах «Towards an Intellectual History of Ukraine: An Anthology of Ukrainian Thought from 1710 to 1995», який було реалізовано 1996 року у Торонто в співпраці з Ральфом Ліндгаймом. У цьому контексті, стаття теж актуалізує едитологію перекладу як важливий міждисциплінарний напрям перекладознавства, що дає змогу всеохопно поглянути на історіософію рецепції української культури в іншомовному просторі та комплексно проблематизувати інтерпретаційні зсуви
