Abstract

This thesis is an examination of the subject of archaeological stratigraphy and has three parts. The first is an historical perspective of the development of stratigraphic notions, such as the law of superposition, in both geology and archaeology. In the same view, the different techniques of archaeological excavation and recording methods on such excavations are examined with particular reference to the school of archaeology established by Sir Mortimer Wheeler and Dame Kathleen Kenyon. Against the general discussion of the first section, the second part of the thesis is a discussion of particular aspects of archaeological stratigraphy, as they occur during and after excavation. The idea of archaeological layers and interfaces is examined in a theoretical sense and as a part of the making of stratigraphic archives in the draughting of archaeological sections and plans. The correlation of these units of stratification, their arrangement into stratigraphic sequences and their dating by the analysis of artefacts are discussed in the final section of this part. In the final section of the thesis, a revision of the foregoing elements of archaeological stratigraphy is made in the light of new methods of archaeological recording, such as the single layer plan and the Harris Matrix, and a re-examination of the laws of archaeological stratigraphy. A glossary of terms used in archaeological stratigraphy is also presented along with an appendix of the methodology of the Harris Matrix.
