Abstract
Since the Kyoto Protocol in 1997, the whole world has been making effort to reduce the greenhouse gasses to minimise the climate change risks. Collecting Institutions such as Public archives and Museums are no exception and many institutions have been trying to mitigate the negative environmental impact of the facilities and practice since. However, historical photographic materials are unstable in general archive environmental settings and require higher maintenance than paper documents. Historic England Archive looks after around 14 million archive materials of England’s environment and built heritage. The archive collection; consists of mainly historical photographic materials, is housed in a purpose-built, four-story archive building that has been fully environmentally controlled since 1994. Although it has been maintaining the optimal temperature and relative humidity levels for vulnerable historical photographic materials for three decades, the HVAC environmental control system requires significant amounts of electricity, associated costs and carbon footprint. It is time to re-evaluate the way the system has been running and to seek if there are any pragmatic and sustainable update options available. Through a collection survey to evaluate the current environmental condition settings, creating a virtual model to simulate new environmental condition set points, carrying out viability testing of energy-saving strategies, an online survey, interviews and visits to learn from other institutions’ efforts, this part-time PhD project is aiming to contribute the archive community how to transform a mechanically assisted archive more sustainable. The talk is a progress report of the project that will be running until 2027.
