Abstract

Nitrogen vacancy centres in diamond are well established quantum systems which display spin coherence and optical addressability from cryogenic to room temperatures. They possess excellent properties for sensing a wide variety of physical parameters and their broad applicability, in part, stems from the fact that NVs may be hosted in a range of configurations, allowing sensing from nano to macroscopic scales with high spatial resolution. Despite the wealth of demonstrations at both room and cryogenic temperatures at the time that the research in this thesis was undertaken, open questions about the temperature dependent dynamics of NV remained. This thesis presents a series of temperature dependent studies into the spin and optical properties of ensembles of near surface NV centres, finding consistency with the previously reported non-monotonic behaviour of deep isolated NVs in the 20-100 K range. Additionally, work is presented on the application of nuclear ancilla-assisted repetitive readout protocols which increase the readout fidelity of a single NV centre hosted in an atomic force microscopy (AFM) scanning probe. In addition to demonstrating an enhanced SNR/√Hz for T1 relaxometry under ambient condition with this system, a study into the trade-offs in the single-shot end-to-end fidelity under variable readout number and optical re-initialisation time per readout pulse is presented. Furthermore, the development of custom AC resonator and waveguide circuitry optimised for the control of specific spin distribution geometries over variable frequency ranges and bandwidths, compatible with the small available volume and single control line of the cryostat system is detailed.
