Abstract
Records management frameworks are essential for the effective delivery of data, information and records through time in trusted and accessible formats. Over the course of the 20th century, governments and private entities recognized the need to more systematically and efficiently ensure that the right information was created, captured and actively managed, ensuring its eventual destruction or archiving. Records management processes and standards emerged, within both a profession and a research discipline. No one framework delivers records management systems effectively in all settings, but the need for efficient records management is clear and growing. We live in a world in which information flows and exchanges are critical for every aspect of our daily lives at home and work. The challenge to manage the complexities and risks inherent within organizational and personal records and information systems is growing. In addition, there is a recognition of the need to engage with all stakeholders and enable critical actors to have a voice in and/or co-create records. This entry discusses the evolution and critical components of records management, drawing mainly on Anglophone practice and literature.
