Abstract

New technology promises to modernise the healthcare sector and prepare staff to deliver digitised, safer, and smarter care. However, little guidance exists to evaluate the suitability of emerging healthcare technology in a hospital setting and take the perspective of ‘boots on the ground’. Instead, there exist high level and overlapping standards that broadly guide procurement and implementation practices but fail to identify the most effective products for a particular healthcare context. Of the frameworks that do exist, these largely focus on the readiness of an organisation and on leadership attributes, failing to capture the perceptions and experiences of end users, who are often front-line healthcare staff or patients. This is even though user acceptance is an established field of research in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI). It is this academic and real-world research gap that this thesis looks to investigate. The approach taken in this thesis is to capture the attitudes and experiences of healthcare staff towards technology-enabled clinical interactions through User Experience (UX) and observational studies adopted from an HCI and healthcare perspective. A central aspect of the research covers the difficult conversations that need to be had in a hospital setting by multiple stakeholders when adopting new and emergent technology. The COVID-19 pandemic period had a profound effect on clinical research practices and as a result, this research path was guided by a renewed interest in healthcare technology that supported infection prevention, remote consultations, and touch-free technology-enabled clinical interactions. As such, the design of new touchless technology is used as a real-world example of an emerging technology in this thesis. The purpose of this research being to apply relevant knowledge to inform a conceptual framework: ARC, for the early exploration and agile Adoption of emeRging healthCare technology. This comprises a validated conceptual framework of 43 statements and an accompanying 10-point checklist to guide the assessment of emerging healthcare technology that focuses on an agile, and collaborative learning strategy, or active discourse to facilitate effective communication when first introducing and evaluating the potential for a new technology.
