Abstract
This thesis elucidates the ambient surface phenomena of photocatalytic water splitting on zinc oxide (ZnO) and titanium dioxide (TiO₂) surfaces under ultra-high vacuum (UHV) conditions and ambient pressure through the application of Surface X-ray Diffraction (SXRD). Detailed characterisation of the structural interface of formic acid with TiO₂ (110), as well as the ambient structural interface of water adsorption on ZnO (101̅0), has been conducted to decipher the mechanisms underpinning photocatalytic activity. Integrating theoretical considerations with empirical inquiries, inclusive of the development and utilisation of a Photo-electrochemical Droplet cell (PEC-DOC) for in-situ studies, this research contributes significantly to our comprehension of the photocatalytic water splitting process. The interfacial interactions of liquid water with ZnO and TiO₂ surfaces are investigated to discern their influence on photocatalytic efficacy, offering profound insights into the structural dynamics at the solid-liquid interface that are pivotal for hydrogen generation.
