Abstract
Territoriality is recognised as a critical process that intertwines space and society and asserts control over a defined area. Drawing from this concept, this paper will undertake a critical urban analysis of the territoriality of Muslims in London; thereby, it aims to identify the specific context of ‘religious territoriality’. It focuses on religious-territorial characteristics and socio-spatial features that enable the diverse (sub-)religious groups of London Muslims to practice and express their beliefs in a multicultural urban setting. The aim is to understand the production of religious spaces in a specific urban religious community by theorising the interconnectedness of territoriality and the expression of religious spaces. Through urban planning and design lenses, a series of multi-scalar maps of London’s religious territorialities, pertaining mainly to Muslim groups, will be produced, analysed, and discussed to illuminate how they influence and shape London’s urban religious landscape. This analysis serves as an essential introduction to the broader research inquiry on how the religious spaces of London Muslim Communities have been produced and transformed into religious infrastructures. The research findings underscore the crucial role that territoriality plays in shaping and directing the flow of religious agency, material goods, space, and time within the confines of territorial boundaries. I argue that territorialising urban religious space is a potent strategy to understand how religious communities or institutions govern the circulation of individuals and objects in delineated territoriality.
